a while ago I asked for your help with matching a tie to a pinstripe suit and purple shirt. While your advice was very helpful, I didn’t exactly manage to find similar tie, and the shirt was wrong, so i went different way. I’d like you to comment on what I was wearing,for future reference.

I dont know if you wore a jacket with that but I assume that you did and even if not there is a lesson to be learned from this regardless.
While the tie and shirt seem to work well enough together based on the photo you have posted, you will notice that the pants pin stripe pattern seems to be similarly spaced to the tie. When the jacket is worn it will play tricks on the eyes unless done correctly. You can see some examples of the concept here. http://wp.me/pvftK-6e
Generally the play it safe rule passed down from Alan Flusser (despite my challenging it in other posts) would be if you are wearing similar patterns (stripes with stripes etc.) , then use different sized/scaled patterns in the different items.
I understand that, that’s the first thing i learned, that stripes should be spaced differently on different items. Unfortunately, i had to change the shirt and the tie at the last minute, and I couldn’t find anything better at such a short notice.
The other problem I had was that I couldn’t tie the knot to a normal width, whilst keeping the tie somewhere around the belt. The knot just seems too small. Am i doing it wrong or should a get wider ties?

Okay.. How about a blue pinstripe jacket with a brown shirt and a tie that brings them both together..? I think it would be nice with a great pair of jeans. Thoughts??
I have gotten the impression that Jeans are pretty much a wildcard and that most things can work with jeans.
That being said, jeans arent a license or at least should not be to pair any other items together once you are wearing jeans.
Elaborate a little more as to the striped jacket and the brown shirt. Solid Brown? Brown Striped? Is the jacket a pin striped suit, orphaned to a jacket or is it a casual striped jacket with patch pocket etc. I think the answers can make the difference between a sharp clubbing or casual outfit to a man who has not job and hasnt had one for a while.
