About Me

Greetings:

Greetings and thank you for reading or referring to my blog to assist you in getting a visual idea on getting dressed for the day or night out.  We all know that a picture is worth a thousand words and the purpose of this blog is to show just how true that adage really is.

Who I am:

Many people have the right items in their wardrobe but lack the ability or the confidence to put it all together.  Some haven’t even the basic ingredients. What I do here is give you the ability to visually see what a tie, or square might look like in action.  Having been born and bred into Tuesday’s Child Boutique which is arguably the premier Children’s European Fashion Retail in the United States with a focus on high fashion for kids I bring to the table close to 40 years of ingrained experience in color blending and matching.  And the beauty of my blog is that if there is something that you like be it a tie, square, scarf, shirt, suit, coat or any other accessory (belts and braces as well) you can purchase it directly from my site, http://www.FourInHand.com which is approaching its 10th year and growing and offers hand made items from Italy and high end cashmeres from Scotland and Italy.

Requests Welcome

Before I say continue I want to clarify that we do take requests.  If you like a tie on the site shoot me an email with a link to the tie, and I will show you how to work it in.  Or you can tell me what kind of suits you wear and I will offer suggestions on ties as well and even if you see a shirt on another website you like link it to me and I will match you up, “from the waist up”.

So what do we want here?

My favorite part of my Men’s business has always been seeing it all come together, How the shirts match the ties, (and how they often don’t).

Often I get requests to match a tie with a shirt or how it would work with a suit, and thus was born”from the waist up” how FIH see’s it all coming together.

Thoughts? Concurring opinions? Dissenting ones? Love It? Hate It? Indifferent?

Its all welcome and its all good. We dont look alike, we dont have to all think alike.

The Principles/Rules

Sorry…You came to the wrong place. I generally don’t do principles for the simple reason that I think that in many cases people follow principles more than feelings.

I had a teacher that once told me that when you are faced with a problem, a question, a test, and you have solved it (or so attempted) in accordance with the rules that you have been taught, before submitting your final answer, run it by another set of tests called the idiot test. Thats when you look at the answer and it simply cannot be.

My Dad and mentor used to tell the following story:

The king has a son that to put it mildly isn’t the brightest bulb in the pack. Knowing that he has to one day tender the reigns to him he hires the best instructors and professors that money can buy and locks him away for years. Finally the day and the son enters the palace beaming from ear to ear. The King, eager to see what kind of intelligence his money bought him slips a ring into his hand and asks his son, “son…can you figure out what I am holding in my hand?”

The prince measures the Kings hands and weighs them whips out a pad and begins scrawling numbers, and diagrams, filling up page after page with equations and geometric symbols and after about a half hour says, “dad, I have come to the conclusion that its ROUND”. The king is amazed and says “go on son, go on”. More Diagrams, more equations, again measuring the kings hands, and weighing them and finally says “ITS GOT A HOLE IN IT”.

Slowly the king begins to smile and says “tell me son, tell em what I am holding in my hand?” and the Prince grinning like an Idiot says, ” Dad CLEARLY YOU ARE HOLDING A WAGON WHEEL”.

I digress but you get the point.

Its not always what the principles say, its how you think it looks.

PS: That being said, I own a copy of Flussers Dressing the Man.

  1. Hello,
I am getting married soon. I looked at your website and specially the pictures and thought you might be the best person to answer this. Its a pretty useful website. Great job man!

So my fiancee has already bought a dress which is pink along those lines (http://seoulcurry.files.wordpress.com/2008/06/colorpink.jpg). I am wearing a charcoal suit and trying to match up with her on this color. I know a white shirt with a pink tie would be perfect, but I don’t want to wear a white shirt (as much as possible). Here are my preferences:
    1) I love bright ties.
    2) I don’t want to mix match a lot of colors. Fewer the colors the better.
    3) I want to be very careful with the pink (don’t want to send the wrong message of being happy and ‘gay’) 🙂

Could you recommend me a few combinations of shirts, ties and pocket squares?

    Thanks in adavance,
    ADG

    • Hi and congratulations on the upcoming wedding. Have lots of happy days together.

I am glad you like the site. Feel free to spread the word to others 🙂

I am probably gonna copy your question to the main box and work off that. I will delete the Gay thing, which as you get married to your wife should leave your mind 🙂

This is a hard color to match as its a fuschia (hot Pink) and will be electric so we might want to work off with a contrasting color that will work with some sort of pink highlights.

Let me see what I can do.

  2. Hello,

I am attending a wedding this weekend and need to pair two suits to match with what my fiance has planned. For the actual wedding I have a dark charcoal suit to be matched to a pink, green/gold sari. The evening reception is a black suit to be matched to a black with bronze metallic highlighted sari.

What would go best with these combos? Please help!

  3. First off, I just want to say I stumbled by your site by accident–well, kind of; I was trying to figure out which tie to get for my outfit–and I’m so glad I did. Your site absolutely rocks. Men need your help! Without you, we’d just pair blue with blue, red with red, etc. That is no way to live! 🙂

Also, I was hoping you could steer me in the right direction regarding what I should wear to my wedding, which is two weeks from now. I have a very nice, black, three-button suit, as well as a ecru-colored shirt with a basic straight collar.

The bridesmaids are wearing deep orange/rust-colored sarees similar to this one: http://media.photobucket.com/image/rust%20saree/acedistributors/Ace%2520Sarees/pari.jpg

My groomsmen are in black, two-button suits with white shirts.

I need to find ties and pocket squares for me and them. I’d like them to have ties and squares that match the bridesmaids in some way. As for me, I just want to (a) look good, (b) stand out from the groomsmen, and (c) not stick out in a bad way. 🙂

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. I’d even take photos and upload them for you, giving you full credit for “dressing” me.

Thanks so much, and I hope to hear from you! Keep up the great work.

    Best,

    Adrian

    • Adrian. I sent you an email. Thanks.

  4. Thank you so much for this site man, greatly appreciated.

Just a quick question. What pocket square would you recommend for a suit very similar to this http://www.fourinhand.com/ProductImages/FTWU/BrownPurple1.jpg but with a charcoal gray suit instead of brown?

Thanks again and keep up the great work!

  5. Errr, sorry about that. 6. Ugh, I’m so very sorry for making such a mess. I got it this time, I promise.

    Shirt: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/821/shirtg.jpg/

    Tie: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/33/tiebo.jpg

    • Ha…I was just getting your email address to email you that…You made a mess 🙂

You are generally safe with a square like this one but it might be too much lilac/purple in the entire ensemble.

This also might work, again though it may have too much lilac in it.

For a twist I might go with something like this which has the paisleys in the right color way and the green works with it all.

  7. I take pleasure in, cause I discovered just what I
was looking for. You have ended my 4 day lengthy hunt!
God Bless you man. Have a nice day. Bye

  8. I love looking through a post that will make men and women think.
Also, thank you for permitting me to comment!

  9. Link exchange is nothing else however it is only
placing the other person’s weblog link on your page at proper
place and other person will also do same for you.
